*A Preliminary Framework for Entity-Relationship Models
in: Entity-Relationship Approach to Information Modeling and Analysis, (edited by P. Chen), North-Holland (Elsevier), 1983, Pages 19 - 28   (file size: 1.14 Meg bytes) .   (This paper describes how different data models such as the hierarchical model and the network model can be viewed as a member of the ER model family.  It also provides a basis for studying translation and equivalence of data models.)

*English Sentence Structure and Entity-Relationship Diagram
Information Sciences, Vol. 1, No. 1, Elsevier, May 1983, Pages 127-149   (file size: 1.20 Meg bytes)    (This paper points out the correspondence between "nouns" and "entities."  Recently, the OO camp also started to argue the correspondence between "nouns" and "objects.")

*From Goto-less to Structured Programming: the Legacy of Edsger W. Dijkstra, in: IEEE Software, Sept/October 2002, page 21.  This is a short article in memorial of Dr. Dijkstra’s contributions and influence to the field of programming and software development.  He died on August 6, 2002.   He was one of the 16 “software pioneers” given special recognition in the “Software Pioneers” conference in Bonn, Germany in 2001.   Dr. Peter Chen was also one of the 16 “software pioneers.” Unfortunately, three software pioneers passed away one year after the conference (In addition, to Edsger Dijkstra, Ole-Johan Dahl and Kristen Nygaard passed away in 2002; all three were Turing Award winners).
